Proper Attic Ventilation Setup
Proper Attic Ventilation Setup
A well-ventilated attic is an essential part of a healthy home, and proper insulation is key to the ventilation system. Insulation helps keep warm air out in winter and cool air in in summer, reducing the workload on cooling systems and lowering energy bills. It also reduces moisture that can cause rot, mold and condensation. In addition, it can help prevent ice damming (snow that melts from an overheated attic and re-freezes near the gutter, damaging the roof covering).
Proper attic batt insulation equalizes temperatures in the living space below and prevents heat buildup above. It also reduces humidity that can damage drywall, sheathing and wood framing. The benefits of attic ventilation are significant enough to justify the cost and effort required for an effective venting system.
The ideal attic ventilation setup involves both soffit and ridge vents. Soffit vents draw in fresh air at the bottom of the attic, which pushes out hot attic air through ridge vents that are located at or near the top. This setup is sometimes referred to as a “balanced” venting system and is the preferred method for attic ventilation.
Other types of venting include gable-mounted ventilators, which are rectangular slotted vents on the outside walls of an attic. These are an affordable option, but do not provide as much balanced attic ventilation as a ridge-soffit configuration. Static roof vents, which look like little boxes scattered around the roof, are another type of passive attic ventilation. However, they require a lot of square footage to allow sufficient air outflow, and they tend to be less attractive than other options.
